Mayor Jake Woodford’s Comments On January 6 Made During 01/06/2021 Common Council Meeting

With the recent governmental changes at the national level, I thought it might be a relevant time to revisit Mayor Jake Woodford’s comments at the 01/06/2021 Common Council meeting.

So before we get to the COVID 19 update, I’d just like to say a few words.

Tonight’s meeting of the Appleton Common Council has more gravity than it might have otherwise. We gather as leaders democratically elected by our fellow Appletonians to do the work of our most local level of government. Even a few weeks ago, we might have taken this meeting and the work we conduct here on behalf of our neighbors and as members of this community for granted. Today’s shocking and appalling events at our nation’s capital serve as a jarring reminder that our sacred form of government requires care, respect, and diligence at every level in order to be preserved. It’s a reminder that words matter. It’s a reminder of the importance of how we treat one another even in our disagreements. Most of all, what is happening in our country right now is a reminder of the responsibilities we have as citizens in a democratic society.

Please join me in a moment of silent reflection on our responsibilities as leaders and citizens.

Thank you.
