Common Council Approves Lawe Street Concrete Reconstruction Design

The Common Council met 09/04/2024. One of the items separated out for an individual vote was the Lawe Street concrete reconstruction design. The plan includes bike lanes between College and Wisconsin and raised median pedestrian crossings at North Street and Pacific Street.

The Municipal Services Committee unanimously recommended the design for approval. Underground work on Lawe Street is scheduled to take place in 2025 with the concrete reconstruction to take place in 2026.

The Council voted unanimously to approve the design.

I’ve prepared a transcript of the discussion for download:

Discussion on the item was brief. Alderperson Vered Meltzer (District 2) expressed appreciation for the work former Public Works Director Danielle Block had done in shepherding this project and also noted that residents in the neighborhood were very interested in having the final design accommodate the planting of flowers in some way that the residents would partner with the city to maintain.

Alderperson Martyn Smith (District 4) echoed that appreciation for former Director Block’s work and asked how the rerouting of traffic during construction was going to affect Meade Street. He noted that Meade Street had two schools on it.

Mayor Woodford said that the details of the traffic impacts to the surrounding streets was something that would be discussed further along in the project, but at this stage, they did not have any details about the specifics of detouring.

The Council voted unanimously to approve the design.

Once it was approved Mayor Woodford noted that there was a lot of interested in the community about the Lawe Street project, and he thanked Alderpersons Meltzer and Smith specifically fro the work they had put into working with residents in the neighborhood.
