The Common Council met 08/21/2024. One of the items on the agenda was Resolution 8-R-24 to require a super majority vote on wheel tax or wheel tax related fee increases. This resolution was recommended for approval by the Finance Committee by a vote of 3-1.
5 of the 15 members of the Common Council were not present for the Council meeting, so the remaining Council members voted 8-2 to hold the resolution until the 09/04/2024 Common Council meeting, which Alderpersons Sheri Hartzheim (District 13) and Chris Croatt (District 14) voting against the hold.
I’ve prepared a transcript of the discussion for download:
Alderperson Nate Wolff (District 12) made a motion to hold the item until the 09/04/2024 Common Council meeting, saying, “I just feel like if we’re going to be talking about a supermajority vote on something, everyone should be here in the room to discuss it. I don’t think having just 10 members talk about wanting a supermajority feels right. So, I think that we should discuss this as a collective.”
Alderperson Hartzheim pointed out that alderpersons who were not present for a Council meeting could call for the reconsideration of an item that had been voted on at the previous meeting. She thought that the could hold a robust discussion with only 10 members, and then if it needed to be reconsidered it could be.
Alderperson Patrick Hayden (District 7) supported holding the item for the very reason Alderperson Hartzheim wanted to take it up then. He thought that if they were going to end up discussing it against at the next meeting, he would rather just hold it instead of discussing it twice.
The Council voted 8-2 to approve the 2-week hold.
