Common Council Meeting 08/07/2024 – Will Vote On Hiring Of New Department Of Public Works Director, Alcohol License For Corner Pub, Issuance Of $26 Million in Promissory Notes And Bonds

The Common Council is meeting 08/07/2024 at 7PM.

As part of Business Presented By The Mayor, Mayor Woodford will be presenting his recommendation for the new Public Works Director to fill the position left vacant when former Director Danielle Block returned to work for the Village of Kimberly. Mayor Woodford is recommending Laura Jungwirth for the position. Laura most recently served as the Director of Public Works for the City of Menasha.

The Council will also be taking up a number of action items. Most of them did not result in much discussion at the committee level; however, one item that did was the request to not renew the alcohol license for the Corner Pub. In February of 2023, the bar experienced catastrophic damage due to a broken water pipe. They were informed that they had until 05/30/2024 to reopen the business and start utilizing their alcohol license in order to maintain the license; however, they do not appear to have made any substantive steps to get the building repaired and the business up and running again until after that deadline had passed. The owner pointed to health issues and multiple deaths in the family as the reason for not having reopened the business reopened prior to the deadline. The Safety and Licensing Committee initially held the item for 2 weeks after the owner indicated all the work was completed and they were just waiting for approval from the Inspections Department. After the business did not pass the inspection and it became clear that multiple issues still needed to be addressed, the committee voted 3-2 to recommend the license be non-renewed. After the item was referred back to the committee, the committee voted 3-2 to recommend the bar be given a deadline of 08/15/2024 to pass inspections and reopen. It was reported during that committee meeting that there are currently only 3 remaining alcohol licenses available in the city and 6 businesses are vying for them. Were this license to be non-renewed, there would then be 4 licenses available for 7 interested businesses.

The Council will also be voting on the request to authorize the sale of $13.5 million in General Obligation Promissory Notes and $12.9 million in sewerage system revenue bonds as will be voted on by the Finance Committee during a special meeting prior to the Common Council meeting.
