Common Council Meeting 06/19/2024 – Will Vote On Wheel Tax Resolution, Pesticide Prohibition Resolution, Proposal To Create Ordinance Banning Short Term Rental Of Scooters In Appleton

The Common Council is meeting 06/19/2024 at 7PM.

Last week was a week with full committee meetings so there is a lot on the agenda including two resolutions.

They will be taking up the resolution to increase the wheel tax.

This resolution was held at the last Common Council meeting at the request of Alderperson Firkus (District 3) who was one of the authors of the resolution but was not able to attend the meeting on 06/05/2024. The resolution was recommended for denial by a vote of 3-2 by the Finance Committee; however, at that committee meeting 6 alderpersons expressed support of the resolution, only 2 shy of a majority of the full Council.

The resolution prohibiting pesticide use by city employees and contractors will also be coming before the Council.

This resolution came before both the Parks and Recreation Committee and the Municipal Services Committee. The Parks and Recreation Committee voted to remove all of the original action items and replace them with a directive for staff to gather information on the turf management pesticides it purchases over the summer and report back at the end of the summer. That version is what is coming before the Council on 06/19.

The Municipal Services Committee voted to hold the resolution for two weeks, and they have not yet voted on a recommendation to go before the Council. At this point, we will have to wait and see how Council will respond to this, whether they will wait until they have recommendations from both committees or just take up the recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Committee.

Another item of interest coming before the Council is the recommendation from the Municipal Services Committee to discontinue negotiations with Bird Rides for 2024 and to create an ordinance prohibiting short-term rental of electric scooters in the city of Appleton.
