The Library Board is meeting 06/18/2024 at 4:30PM.
They will be voting on a request to spend $18,000 to update the library’s branding ahead of the opening of the new building.
They will also be voting on a request to authorize the Appleton Public Library to begin billing Winnebago County for services provided to Winnebago County residents who live in areas that have not established libraries. Library Director Colleen Rortvedt estimates that the library will bring in approximately $107,000 in 2025 by doing this.
They will also vote on a request to award the self-checkouts contract to MK Solutions for no more than $50,000.
The board will also receive a number of information items including information on planning services and collaborative/cooperative agreements, as well as the building project monthly update.
They will also be engaging in the second half of a two-part trustee development discussion centered around an article entitled “An Exploratory Social Justice Framework to Develop Public Library Services with Underserved Families.”
The basic premise of the article is that libraries labor under the history of a “White-IST (white + elitist) legacy and cultural inheritance of racism (amongst other ‘-isms’ such as sexism, ableism, etc.) in the United States.” The article’s authors believe that history, along with a problematic focus on only providing information has led to librarians playing a minimal role in helping families (particularly low-income and disadvantages groups) overcome their “sociocultural, socioeconomic, and sociopolitical debilitating circumstances.”
The first part of the trustee development discussion took place at the 05/14/2024 board meeting, and the second part will be taking place at this meeting.
