Common Council Meeting 05/15/2024 – Will Mark Fifth Anniversary Of AFD Fire Fighter Mitch Lundgaard’s Murder, Vote On Overnight On-Street Parking Resolution

The Common Council is meeting 05/15/2024 at 7PM.

The mayor’s business portion of the agenda is somewhat heavy. Not only will Mayor Woodford be presenting 5 mayoral proclamations, but he will also be presenting the Appleton Police Department Civilian Community Service Award to Caleb Daguanno and Gio Sanchez and also marking the fifth anniversary of the murder of Appleton Fire Department Fire Fighter Mitch Lundgaard by the man to whom he was rendering aid.

Of the items that the Council will be voting on, the only one that obviously stands out to me as likely to be separated out is the resolution regarding over-night on-street parking. The resolution, which would allow on-street overnight parking in the city of Appleton, has been discussed by the Municipal Services Committee several times over the last 6 months. Staff recommended against approving it, citing a number of logistical issues such as the impact on street sweeping and snow plowing operations. An item of particular concern was how allowing overnight parking would impact Appleton’s ability to qualify for a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit from the DNR. After multiple attempts to mitigate some of those issues, the committee ended up voting against it by a vote of 4-1.

Some of the other items may be separated out for an individual vote if Council members have questions or want to highlight a specific item, but none of the other items garnered much discussion at the committee level.
