The Safety and Licensing Committee is meeting 09/27/2023 at 5:30PM.
They will be voting on a cigarette license application and four temporary alcohol license applications various events.
The main action item they will be discussion is the Police Department’s sole source request for Flock Safety Automatic license place readers cameras. The department has been running a pilot program for the last year that included 29 cameras placed in various locations across the city and would now like to permanently maintain 19 of those cameras. Flock is the sole source for this technology and it will cost the city $36,150 to maintain the 19 cameras.
[The memo seems a little sparse on details. Firstly, it’s not clear what exactly the $36,150 covers or for how long.
Secondly, I don’t remember anything about this pilot program, though it’s possible I missed the meeting at which it was discussed. Before going forward, it would be nice to have a more comprehensive report demonstrating the value of the cameras such as the number of criminals it has helped the police track down and the types of crimes those criminals committed. If these cameras actually help the police catch criminals, then maybe they are worth it, but if they’re just glorified nanny cams helping the police slap the wrists of regular drivers because their license plates are expired or they’ve committed minor traffic violations, then they may not be worth it. Hopefully all of these things will be discussed in detail at the Safety and Licensing Committee meeting.]
