The Miracle League Field at Memorial Park will be getting a new rubberized surface. Back in June the Finance Committee voted to reject a bid to resurface the field because the bid was $144,000 over-budget. Goodwill Industries will be covering the cost of the resurfacing, but they had only budgeted $175,000 for the project, so the bid had to be rejected.
The city ended up changing to scope of the project. Instead of covering the field with a 10mm thick rubber coating, they went down to a 6mm thick coating. The reduced thickness of the rubberized surface did not change the warranty or the life expectancy. It just decreased the softness of the surface, but that difference in softness was considered appropriate for the players to play on.
There were some divots and puddles in the existing field, but those would be fixed. The current asphalt subsurface will be filled in and smoothed out before the new rubberized surface is installed.
The reduction in thickness brought to cost down from $319,550 to $279,000. Goodwill Industries was also able to increase their budget from $175,000 to $279,000 to cover the cost. On 08/21/2023 The Finance Committee voted unanimously to approve the update bid for the project.
I’ve prepared a transcript of the discussion for download.
