Common Council Approves $6,180 In Reimbursements To Riverside Cemetery For The Maintenance Of Veterans’ Graves, Refers Back St. Joseph’s Cemetery Reimbursement Request For Further Review

The Common Council met 08/02/2023. Outside of Resolution 7-R-23, two other action items were separated out for an individual vote, both related to the maintenance of veteran graves.

I’ve prepared a transcript of the discussion for download.

The first item was a reimbursement request from St. Joseph cemetery which was a little confusing. The care and upkeep of each veteran grave within the cemetery was listed as being $18 per year; however, the number of graves covered by the agreement was listed as 0. The item had been discussed at the Finance Committee meeting on 07/24/2023 during which Finance Director Jeri Ohman had indicated that the city did not actually reimburse that and the form would be sent on to the county which actually reimbursed the costs. At the time she said that she was going to double check those numbers prior to the item coming before Council.

When the item came before the Council, Director Ohman indicated that staff was still researching the request and she hoped it would be referred back to committee. Alderperson Sheri Hartzheim (District 13) requested that the item be referred back to committee.

The second item was a reimbursement request from Riverside Cemetery Association for the maintenance of 618 veteran graves at $10 per grave for a total of $6,180. Alderperson Alex Schultz (District 9), who is a veteran himself, thanked the staff for recommending approval of the funding, which would help to maintain graves that would otherwise be a challenge to fund. “it’s a small ticket item to honor the veterans who served this community.” He also hoped that once the dollar amount for St. Joseph’s Cemetery was clarified that the Council would support that as well.

The motion to approve the Riverview Cemetery reimbursement passed 15-0.
