Resolution 8-R-23 was approved unanimously by the Common Council on 08/02/2023. The resolution created the Appleton Conservancy inside Southpoint Commerce Park and dedicated city-owned property inside Southpoint Commerce Park for parkland, trailhead, and trail.
As discussed during the 07/24/2023 Parks and Recreation Committee meeting, the park will sit on wetland that cannot be developed for commercial purposes and is intended to be a passive park, focused on preserving the land that is there with unpaved, unlit walking trails that don’t affect the environment. They also plan to have cross-country skiing trails as well as some bike trails, allowing people to get away from the city and experience nature. Work on the park and trails was not expected to begin for another 18-24 months.
Resolution 8-R-23 came before the Parks and Recreation Committee, the Community and Economic Development Committee, and the City Plan Commission, all of which voted unanimously to approve it.
The resolution was also approved with a vote of 15-0 by the Common Council, which did not discuss the item or have any questions about it.
After it was passed, Mayor Woodford spoke briefly and thanked the Council and particularly Alderperson Katie Van Zeeland (District 5) for their support of the Appleton Conservancy. “Just want to take a moment and recognize this as an important moment for our community. I want to thank the Council for your support of the creation of the Appleton Conservancy. I also want to thank, in particular, Alder Van Zeeland for her support of the process and submitting the resolution to create this conservancy. And we look forward to getting to work on it over time as resources allow.
“But also thank you to each member of the Council. I think everybody just about touched this in your committee meetings, since it was at three different committees. So, thank you all for your work, your review of this, and again, thank you for supporting it. So, congratulations to the Council on this important moment.”
