Board Of Education Meeting 01/09/2023 – Will Receive Several Monitoring Reports, Review Proposed Math Curriculum, Discuss WASB Resolutions

The Appleton Area School District Board of Education is meeting 01/09/2023 at 6PM.

They will be receiving reports on a new instructional book, Thinking Mathematically, for the Math Topics course. AASD wants to align their Math Topics course with the Fox Valley Technical College’s College Mathematics course so they need to use the same curriculum as FVTC is using.

They will also be receiving a recommendation to change the district’s policy regarding retiree’s accessing the health insurance plan and employees retiring at the end of the first semester.

Currently, retirees of any age are allowed “to remain on the District’s health insurance plan indefinitely at the retiree’s expense”, however, “With the District’s transition to self-funding, the District’s benefits consulting firm strongly recommended that the District discontinue the practice of allowing retirees age 65 and over, and thus Medicare eligible, to continue on the District’s health insurance plan.”

AASD currently allows retiring employees to receive post-employment benefits by submitting “a retirement letter by February 15 for end of year retirements or by October 20 for end of first semester retirements.” They did this in order to provide time to hire qualified replacements; however, because of the difficulty in finding qualified replacements to take over in the middle of the year, they would like to remove the option for employees to receive post-employment benefits if they retire mid-year.

The board will also be receiving a number of monitoring reports and discussing the 2023 Wisconsin Association of School Boards resolutions that will be up for a vote at the Wisconsin State Education convention later this month.
