Human Resources And Information Technology Committee Votes To Hold 2024 Aldermanic Salary Discussions Until October 26

The Human Resources and Information Technology Committee met 09/14/2022. One of the items that had been on the agenda was a request to approve alderperson salaries for the 2024 aldermanic year. State Statute 62.09(6)(am)2 prevents elected officials from voting on their own salary changes, so  In order for the Council to approve any salary changes for all 15 members of the Common Council, they need to make those changes before December 1 which is the first day alderpersons running for office in 2023 (and who will be still serving in 2024) can file nomination papers to run for office.

The committee voted to hold the item until October 26. They did so for two reasons.

  1. Although the 2023 budget would not be affected by changes to the aldermanic salaries for 2024, the committee members wanted to look at the 2023 budget and city staff salaries before making a decision on aldermanic salaries.
  2. Two of the five members of the committee were absent, and Alderperson Denise Fenton (District 6) felt that, although they had a quorum, a discussion about aldermanic salaries ought to ideally involve the entire committee.
