Guess who’s hanging out in the parking lot of Area 509 near the corner of Badger and Linwood? Yup, it’s everybody’s favorite Big Head. Presumably it’s being stored there until it can be shipped out to Bozeman, Montana.
In fall of 2021, Alderperson Alex Schultz (District 9), speaking in his capacity as the Executive Director of Sculpture Valley, had explained to the Municipal Services Committee some of the logistical issues they were experiencing finding someone to ship the Collective sculpture to Montana. He ended up being granted a lease extension until the end of April 2022 to continue displaying the sculpture off of College Avenue. It was understood there would be no further lease extensions and it would have to come down by the end of April.
During the Common Council meeting on 04/20/2022, Alderperson Schultz had separated out the alcohol license application for Area 509 so that he could abstain from voting. At the time I had wondered why he had done so given that he had not abstained from voting when the item came before the Safety and Licensing Committee a week before, but I would assume that at some point in between those two meetings Sculpture Valley came to an agreement with Area 509 to store the Collective sculpture.
If you liked the Big Head and would like to say goodbye one last time, you best make the pilgrimage to Area 509 sooner rather than later to bid farewell.
