Today is Arbor Day, so a perfect day to highlight a particular Appleton tree.
In 1760, Daniel Boone purportedly, after killing a bear near Jonesborough TN, carved into a birch tree the inscription “D. Boon cilled a bar on tree in the year 1760”. This tree stood until 1920 when it was finally blown over in a storm.
Appleton may not host any trees quite as famous as that one, but we do have a birch tree that people have chosen, like Daniel Boone so many years ago, to leave their mark upon. This tree sits near the Fox River along the Newberry Train in between Lawe Street and Riverheath Way, and although it bears no messages per se, it does display an inordinate number of names and initials.
