Appleton Public Montessori has hit the two percent threshold for positive Covid-19 cases among students and will spend the next 14 days under a mandatory masking rule. As was recently illustrated by Columbus Elementary, the Appleton Area School District’s current masking protocols disproportionally and inequitably impact small schools. Three elementary schools can have no more than 2 Covid-positive students at any given time without hitting the 2% threshold that prompts a 14-day mandatory masking period. Other schools, however, can have markedly more Covid-positive students and not reach that limit. For example, at this time, Richmond Elementary has 4 Covid-positive students and is only at 1.45%. Highlands Elementary had 3 Covid-positive students (the same number as Appleton Public Montessori) but is only at 0.45%.
Meanwhile, the City of Appleton is in the “Low” Covid-19 community level as set by the CDC and just recently announced that it will be closing its Covid-19 testing site due to low demand.
