First off, the numbers for Appleton’s Covid-19 dashboard seem somewhat confusing this week. On 07/29/2021 they listed total confirmed and probable cases as being 8,961. Now, for 08/01/2021 they list the total number of confirmed and probable cases as being 8,990, an increase of 29; however, the dashboard lists only 12 new confirmed and probable cases. My best guess is that, for some reason, the person who entered the numbers, only listed the daily totals for one day (12) instead of for the entire weekend (29) as they typically do. I did call the Health Department to find out what was going on, but did not get through to the person who enters the numbers. The Appleton Health Department has posted on their facebook page that Appleton’s weekly total of Covid cases was 70 which would line up with a weekend total of 29—not 12.
With that being said, it appears that from 07/30/2021-08/01/2021, Appleton had 24 confirmed coronavirus cases and 5 probable cases. Active cases rose by 15 to 68, and cases out of isolation increased by 4. Deaths remained unchanged at 65.
Over the last week, Appleton had a total of 55 confirmed cases and 15 probable cases which makes our 2 week burden 149 or 107 depending on if probable cases are included in the calculation.
Last year, Appleton reported it’s first coronavirus case on March 18. In 2020 from March 18 through August 1, we had a total of 467 cases and 5 deaths. This year between March 18 and August 01, we’ve had a total of 805 cases but only 2 deaths. Last year, our 7 day running average of daily new cases stood at 8.57 on August 1; this year it has just risen above that and stands at an even 10. In spite of having more overall cases this year than last year and in spite of the 7-day running average of new cases being higher than at this time last year, Appleton’s active cases which currently stand at 68 are markedly lower than they were this time last year when they stood at 161. So, we have more overall cases and a slightly higher 7 day running average of new cases, but active cases and deaths are quite a bit lower than they were at this time last year.
If we go over to the Wisconsin Hospital Association website and check Covid hospitalization numbers, those also are down quite a bit this year as compared to last year. Right now we have 12 total hospitalized Covid patients in the entire 8 county Fox Valley HERC region and 0 Covid patients in the ICU. Last year at this time, we had 21 people hospitalized with Covid, 5 of whom were in the ICU.
