Common Council To Consider Permanent Rules Changes To No Longer Require In-Person Attendance At Council Meetings

The Appleton Common Council is holding an informal organizational meeting on 06/15/2021 at 6pm and a formal organizational meeting on 06/16/2021 at 6pm.

They’ll be discussing and voting on possible changes to the Council’s rules, and will be specifically looking at if/how/under what circumstances to allow virtual participation in meetings.

They will also be considering whether to change or keep as is current Council Rule 16 which states “Any motion for an amendment on an action item on the Council Agenda requires two votes: 1) to get the amendment accepted or declined; 2) if accepted, action to be taken on the motion as amended. Once an amendment has been proposed, that amendment shall be resolved prior to the introduction of a second amendment.”

As discussed at the last Common Council meeting, this rule is in place but has not been followed so they should either change it or start following it. (https://allthingsappleton.com/2021/06/08/common-council-passes-knowles-nelson-resolution-after-making-minor-changes/)

Alderperson Chad Doran (District 15) explained the purpose of the informal meeting prior to the formal meeting in his weekly Council notes post on his blog. “The purpose of Tuesday’s informal meeting is for us to have frank discussions about what our desires for these two items are.”
