Board of Education candidate and AASD parent Amber McGinley has released a statement in response to having been banned from AASD property.
I am an outspoken advocate for kids with disabilities in a district that doesn’t want kids with disabilities in its classrooms. The District’s ban is the latest in a series of efforts to retaliate and silence our family for standing up for the rights of our son and other special needs students to be treated fairly. There is a serious and ongoing problem in Appleton Area Schools with violating anti-discrimination laws, and now they have chosen to violate the Constitution as well by illegally punishing me for calling attention to it. Because the ban is unconstitutional and the school has so far not been willing to withdraw it, we are now working with a civil rights attorney and are preparing to file a federal court challenge if necessary. This is a perfect example of why big changes are needed in the Appleton Area School District. The administration should be working to protect and provide for kids, not wasting taxpayers’ money on retaliation and litigation.”
