Tonight Alderperson Denise Fenton was planning to request to suspend rules to allow the Common Council to debate the resolution on putting a referendum on the April 6 ballot regarding non-partisan redistricting. She was going to do this because the deadline to put something on the ballot is very tight and they will not meet it if they send the resolution to a committee first. Suspending the rules would allow the Common Council to take up the issue and vote on it tonight. The drawback is that the public would not be able to give any input. Alderperson Fenton believes this is not an issue because, from her statement on her Facebook page, “The Common Council has already passed a resolution in favor of nonpartisan redistricting, and the mayor has issued a proclamation as well.”
Unfortunately, I had to stop watching the meeting during the Covid update, so I can’t tell you at this point how it went. I will provide an update once the meeting video becomes available.
