Covid Update From Health Officer Eggebrecht

Health Officer Eggebrecht gave a Covid-19 update at the 01/06/2021 Common Council meeting.

Per Health Officer Eggebrecht, since March Appleton’s numbers have been steadily increasing and as of 01/06/2021 we were at 6,666 cases (confirmed and probable). We have, however, seen a steady significant change since November. He noted the increase in numbers this last week, but thought those were due to the holidays and hoped it was a one off and not a trend. They are still monitoring it. We are still in the “Very High” category instead of the “Critically High” category. He stated he would like to see us get down to the April/May levels (which would be “Low” to “Moderate”) but he waved his cursor over the July/August section of the chart (which is “High”).

The National Guard testing site in Appleton ended its time at North High School. (Although not mentioned in the meeting, it has since reopened at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center). From October 16-Jan 6 they tested 14,180 people.

[Also not mentioned, but worthy of note. The fact that they closed the site at North is a positive sign that the schools may actually be opening for the 2nd Semester as currently, tentatively planned.]

The Department of Health has brought on a vaccine coordinator, Julie Lederhaus. She will be helping with their Covid vaccination planning (read more here). She worked at the Health Department a few years ago, helping with the development of smallpox mass vaccination clinics and the functional exercises the department ran at North High school.

Mayor Woodford said that it’s encouraging to have tools to fight Covid and get on the offensive, but he stated that the community will still continue to have to be diligent with mitigation efforts.
