The AASD Board of Education met 10/26. Board President Kay Eggert started the meeting with a public statement intended to clarify the Board’s role in reopening school.
“I just wanted to take an opportunity to clarify–a number of emails the Board has recently received have questioned the Board’s involvement in determining the district’s educational model. So I wanted an opportunity to just clarify the role of the board and the role also of the administration regarding the Safe and Resilient Return framework.
The Board approved the district framework for safe and resilient return as well as objective criteria to drive decisions regarding educational models. The Board also authorized the administration authority to transition between different models within the framework, as necessary to respond to conditions related to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. This authority did not reliquish the board’s authority to request review of or changes to decision making criteria. Rather, it provided the administration with the flexibility necessary to be responsive while retaining Board of Education authority and oversight.”

I’m not sure what exactly that statement clarified. So far as I know, pretty much everyone is aware of the information she restated. The question people have is not so much “Can the Board review and make changes to the district’s reopening policies?” but rather “Does the Board have the political will to represent the best interests of the students even when the students’ interests conflict with the administration’s desires?”
After having watched a couple month’s of meetings, I would be very surprised if this Board ever voted in opposition to the administration’s desires.
