The Common Council voted to approve a special use permit for Malcore Foods to manufacture dairy products at their new location of 300 E. Coolidge Ave.
Nearby residents were opposed to this out of concern that it would increase traffic, reduce on-street parking, and cause unpleasant smells. The Common Council felt that these concerns were unfounded. The building owner will be adding 7 new parking spaces on the property, the operation will all be contained in the building, there will be no dumping of milk or other products outside that might cause smells, and the owner is already planning to work with deliver trucks to make sure they have routes that avoid the nearby schools.
The location has been zoned commercial since the 1940s, so this was not a situation where a commercial business was forcing its way into an otherwise residential area. There really wasn’t a compelling reason to not allow specialty European cheese manufacturing to take place at this location.
The council voted 14-0 to grant the special permit.
Looks like Appleton has some specialty European cheese in its future.
