The Library Board is meeting 10/20 at 4:30pm. Are you as excited about the carpeting project update as I am?
Of interest is the historic overview of the library project. Over the last 12 years, there have been at least 7 studies/assessments/community feedback forums conducted and finally here we are now moving forward with a plan to expand the library on its current location.
[Excuse the editorializing: this is the exact plan many Appleton residents advocated for over the last 12 years but which the library team staunchly opposed. It kind of makes one wonder if all those studies were really necessary or if the library leadership was just using them as a way to convince the community that keeping the library at its current location was infeasible. Beyond that, my impression is that the community wanted to keep the library at the current location as a way to hopefully keep costs down. Going forward, it will be interesting to see if the library board and leadership make efforts to respect those desires or if they’ll continue to look at expansion plans that are wildly expensive.]
Also on the agenda, the library’s operation plans during the pandemic. They’ll be moving between 5 stages from fully closed to socially distanced full service depending on the status of the virus in the community and among library staff.
They’re also going to have an overview of the core values of librarianship that may be worth checking out. Some power point slides show support for intellectual freedom and having resources that reflect all points of view but then other slides indicate they’ll be discussing safe spaces and “fake news” as they relate to intellectual freedom and diversity of viewpoint.
They’ll also be going over September expenses, their United Way grant, and various grant funded programs.
