Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. It looks like AASD’s administration is unwilling to meet with concerned parents who are medical professionals. Per an email from Clara Kopplinger they are willing to meet with the leaders of the AASD Parents And Students For Change Facebook group. However, several parents in the group who are medical professionals wanted to attend that meeting also, and AASD leadership is unwilling to meet with them.
As other area schools continue to successfully offer in-person education, as AASD students continue to struggle academically, and as new research indicates classrooms are not significant sources of coronavirus spread among adults, it seems AASD leadership is digging its heels in and refusing to even consider the possibility that reopening Appleton schools might be feasible, nor are they willing to discuss that decision with a group of parents who are educated medical professionals.

Good afternoon,
I apologize, but I believe there has been some confusion about the intent of this meeting. We would like to meet with you, Erik, and Keith, as representatives of a parent group, to hear your concerns as they relate to education. The purpose is not to consider or debate the differing views of medical professionals. We are not medical experts or epidemiologists; we are educational professionals. We take our guidance regarding reopening schools from the DPI, the DHS and the City of Appleton Health Department, per our pandemic plan. Conversations and concerns regarding recommendations related to public health, epidemiology or other medical advice should happen in a different venue with the appropriate experts at the table.
We believe that parent feedback regarding student education is vital to helping us improve, and we would very much like to have that conversation with you. Partnership in education between parents and schools is essential to student success. You are the best advocates for your children. When you help us better understand their specific challenges, as well as areas where they’ve experienced success, we can make adjustments that will help to improve the learning experience. This is where our focus needs to be.
We appreciate the willingness of local medical professionals to share their insights and information, and encourage them to contact local public health departments to engage in that conversation.
